What is a kiddush cup?

At the beginning of a meal to mark a Jewish holiday (including Shabbat), a Kiddush is said over wine or juice. “Kiddush” is related to the Hebrew word “Kadosh”, which means holy. The Kiddush thanks God for the “fruit of the vine”, for creation, for the holiday in question, and for bringing us out of slavery in Egypt.

The cup that holds the wine or juice is called a Kiddush cup, and it is usually special in some way: it might be a little fancier, or saved only for that purpose, or it might be a special gift or heirloom.

If you’re curious, take a look at our blog about the rules for a Kiddush cup.

We have lovely little Kiddush cups, if you are looking for one for yourself as a gift. They’re silver-plated, with an image of grapes embossed on them. You can buy them on their own or add them to a custom box. They are included in our Seder Box and Basic Box. Of course, we include the blessing over wine in those boxes as well!
